What it is: Congress recently passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. This bill includes several changes to Medicare that will benefit those with kidney disease. Medicare changes that will impact healthcare costs for those with kidney disea

  • Limits Part D out-of-pocket prescription drug expenses (capped at $2,000/year)

  • Allows for healthcare costs to be spread out over the year rather than the bulk of expenses occurring in the first month(s) of the year

  • Allows Medicare to negotiate drug prices for select drugs

  • Caps insulin copays to $35 per month

  • Expands Low-Income Subsidies (LIS) which will now cover all or part of monthly premiums for beneficiaries with incomes between 135-150% of the federal poverty level.

Why it matters to you: The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will benefit Medicare beneficiaries with kidney disease by reducing out-of-pocket expenses for prescription drugs, allowing Medicare to negotiate drug pricing, and capping insulin costs to $35 per month. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause or worsen kidney damage, and making insulin more accessible will help prevent kidney disease as a result of unmanaged diabetes. You can read more about the bill in this article from the National Kidney Foundation here.
